South Africans have every reason to be proud today, particularly of its musical exports. Today, The Lion King: The Gift by Beyoncé dropped. When the credits came out, it was clear that Beyoncé prioritized the presence of African artists. In an interview about her contributions to The Lion King, she said that this album was produced to be her "love letter to Africa."
From the South African stable, we knew that Moonchild Sanelly and Busiswa would appear on the album. Since the debut of The Lion King: The Gift, more South Africans have been credited for their contributions to the album. Two of these individuals are DJ Lag, responsible for songs like "Omunye," and ANATII, responsible for hits like "The Saga."
Beyoncé is arguably the standard of musical excellence in the music industry and equally unattainable to many artists. Seeing South African artistry and musicality represented on the album is historic. More so than that, the presence of isiXhosa in the lyrics only further solidifies South Africa in the history of music.
To put it simply, the soundtrack is brilliant, and you should add it to your library immediately.
