It's always a great day for good news and we just got word that the road to the 5th Annual African Musik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) is about to kick off, starting with the announcements of this year's nominees. The ceremony, which caters for all African music genres, is billed to take place on the 7th of October 2018 in Dallas, Texas (USA).
As usual, we had our ears perked out to see who in SA hip hop is repping for the streets and we are happy to report that some of our gems are making us look good there. The young king, Nasty C, is leading the pack of Southie nominations with 5 nominations while Mufasa, Cassper Nyovest, follows him with 4 nominations. Going down the list, we also have the likes of Kwesta, Tweezy, Shane Eagle, Emtee, and video director Justin Campos bagging a nomination each. It's always an eye opener to see how the rest of the continent's music media and wider entertainment industry see our industries and if you look closely, there are specific characteristics (or traits) in the artists that cross our borders with their music. Other South African nominees include the likes of Trevor Noah, Black Coffee, Prince Kaybee, Shekhinah, Distruction Boyz, Mafikizolo, Babes Wodumo, Busiswa, and Bucie to mention a few. I am a bit disappointed that some of our female rappers are not cited given the huge year that names like Rouge have been having, but that just speaks to the level of cross border reach and impact required which I think counts enormously in such broad conversations. Have a look at which categories our fellas are nominated in and get voting:
