Mikhalé Jones Breaks Down How Her Album Represents Her Relationship With DefJam Africa

By @SeptemberEleven on 09/09/2024 in On The Ground

R&B singer Mikhalé Jones says her new album ’Too Many Promises’ was as much about “the label” as it was about a romantic relationship.

“As much as it’s about a relationship and the interaction between a human and another human being, it also represents my relationship with the label that I come from. It being toxic and me also realising that, at some point, I need to take some form of accountability for that relationship as well but at the end of the day I still believe in what I was gifted with, which is all of this. And I get to live it now without them,” she says.

Even though Mikhalé didn’t mention the label by name, she was one of the artists who were signed and dropped by DefJam Africa over the last few years. The singer dropped her sophomore album ‘Too Many Promises’ in June under SOLDistro.

Elsewhere in the interview, she speaks about winning ‘MTN Pulse Virals’ and shares some advice for fellow indie artists.
