Loki is dropping a new single on the 16th of August titled ‘Amaphanta’, featuring Saudi and Emtee.
We caught up with the ex-SKHANDAWORLD signee about ‘Amaphanta’, which he says is a present for his paps and “a gift to the hood”.
How is this collaboration a gift to the hood?
The collaboration is a gift to the hood because it’s a gift to home, it’s a gift to the people I’m around and the people who’ve supported me in my journey. Ilokish lives off of songs that stand for something, a story of hardship but also a story of triumph.
What have been the challenges of being independent?
Biggest challenge I’ve had has got to be reach. I mean amongst the 24/7 brainstorming which takes away from things you should be doing to put things in effect, reach is very important. I’ve always trusted my sound so the product is there but you’re not necessarily on the “cool” stand anymore.
What are the lessons that you’ve learned with being independent?
I was independent before so it isn’t very new for me and I also work best “alone” . It’s just getting the mind ready for it. This industry needs you to fortify your mind and set realistic goals that are true to who and where you are. So I’m always trying to beat what I did before. Learning how to structure the business.
How did you feel your last single was received?
I got mixed feelings about how ‘Rutle’ performed. In a different place different time it maybe goes crazy, but this goes to show that it takes a lot to have that song. I still get rave reviews about it nanamhlanje. People are still just finding it months later, it still has a life to live.
What’s your advice from indie artists who leave a successful label?
Respectfully, I wouldn’t know how it feels to leave a “successful” label since we didn’t really reach those heights. We could’ve done a lot better as a unit but artists need to take more responsibility for themselves, even when under a successful label. Things change overnight in this industry and you gotta always be ready for that change.
