South African musical icon Thandiswa Mazwai returns with her eagerly awaited single, ‘Kulungile’, featuring Nduduzo Makhathini. The song is housed on Thandiswa Mazwai’s forthcoming album, ‘Sankofa’.
The new offering carries the profound message of overcoming past wounds and finding peace within. ‘Kulungile’, translating to ‘it is well’ in isiXhosa, reflects on her journey, reminding us that pain fades and wounds can be mended.
The release of ‘Kulungile’ sets the stage for Thandiswa’s forthcoming album, ‘Sankofa’, slated for May 10th, 2024. To celebrate the album's release, Thandiswa will deliver a performance at Carnival City, Johannesburg on May 11th. The concert will feature tracks from ‘Sankofa’, as well as highlights from Thandiswa’s iconic debut solo album, ‘Zabalaza’, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in March.
"Sankofa in the Ghanian language Twi means to go back and fetch what’s been left behind - what is important, what honours you, and what needs healing. Kulungile is about healing some of the traumas that we experience as children. Many of us have faced rejection, abandonment, and sexual violence. This song is for that child within that seeks justice, comfort and healing.”, explains Thandiswa.
Thandiswa’s recent success includes her acclaimed Tiny Desk Concert, where she mesmerised audiences with her raw talent and impassioned performance. During the concert, she dedicated the opening song to the "beautiful and ever-resilient people of South Africa," further cementing her connection with her homeland and its people.
With ‘Kulungile’ and the upcoming album ‘Sankofa', Thandiswa continues to push boundaries and inspire audiences with her unique blend of music and message.
Tickets for the Carnival City performance are available for purchase through Computicket.
