Sportscene and Nike celebrated 10 years of tech fleece with their musical athletes on September 7th.
10 years of tech fleece marked a significant moment where athletic performance met music and cultural expression.
In a conversation with Dom Nice who is a DJ, artist and producer about how the two interlink, he explained that "traditionally, athletes, musicians and creative individuals were often kept separate. However, now, there is a blending of the two, where rugby players can pursue music and vice versa".
This shift signifies a changing landscape that accommodates a more inclusive space for all.
The event drew a youthful crowd of musicians and fans who immersed themselves in the beats of headline Hip-Hop sensation A-Reece, DJ Phonikz while the charismatic TV personality Lerai added a special touch of entertainment.
Amidst the talented lineup, emerging artists Chelsea-Sloan, Domnic Hurd, Toroh O Wano and DJ Double D were introduced to the floor as musical athletes. Each taking up a special skill set in both music and sport.
Speaking to Chelsea-Sloan who is a DJ, dancer and physiotherapist on being a musical athlete, she said: "My personal perspective is that I am a musical athlete, so with me they [music and sport] feed off each other when I am an athlete I need music to stimulate me, I need music to keep me going..”
On a grander scale, the Sportscene and Nike collaboration aims to reposition tech fleece at the intersection of sports and culture, honouring athletes who transition into the world of music, taking on roles as DJs, vocalists and rappers to name the least.
