It was handed to Sizwe Alakine; to any hip-hop head and rapper who’s clued up about SA Hip-Hop history, the word “excellent” on the hook for Jayden Lanii & DJ Sickoo’s single was always gonna evoke memories of Shaheen’s monumental verse from the legendary group’s 1995 single ‘Never Again’. Shaheen, celebrating Nelson Mandela being the first democratically elected South African president in 94, rapped, “Excellent, finally a black president, to represent I know as so I speak it.” Look, if you know, you know.
In his verse on Jayden Lanii & DJ Sickoo’s single ‘Excellent’, which also features Mr JazziQ, Sizwe raps, “Excellent, I can be a black president to represent izinja zam emakhoneni.” In the rest of the verse, Sizwe goes on to motivate and speak up against drug abuse and encourages the spirit of hustling.
This is an indicator that even as an Amapiano rapper, Sizwe Alakine is still Hip-Hop to the core.
