I said this earlier in the year and I will say it once again, musically, 2022 has 2016 potential. Why I say this? You may ask - 2016 is deemed to be a peak year in music globally through all the really dope music that was shared.
Six years later and we can finally say that we are heading in the right direction. In 2021 we got to see the rise of Durbanite, Blxckie, as well as some incredible amapiano artists such as Kelvin Momo, De Mthuda, Nkosazana Daughter and more. 2022 has seen the rise of many artists, exciting ones at that in only seven months, and today I will be taking you through TEN of the most exciting artists of the year 2022.
Please note that this list is in no particular order and shouldn't be the concentration of this article. Let's find out who we think are 2022's most exciting artists;
The Pretorian rapper, Tyson Sybateli has been in the mouths of many this year following his unprecedented pre-album rollout, and the release of his highly anticipated album, "HOME". Dubbing that he currently has the album of the year, Tyson Sybateli is indeed an exciting act.
The talented singer-songwriter, Ben September is an artist everyone should be listening to right now. Following the release of his single, "Right Now" with KLY and Sibi, Ben September is easily becoming a favourite over here and is an exciting act to look out for this year.
One half of hip-hop duo B3nchMarQ, Jay Jody is undoubtably an underrated artist and extremely exciting artist. Recently heard on the collaborative mixtape, "Heaven Can Wait" of December 2021 with his brother A-REECE, Jay Jody has indeed won over some fans and have since been working on his debut solo body of work. This upcoming solo album is exactly what Jody needs to prove his point!
Klerksdorp's chosen poetic rapper, Maglera Doe Boy deserves to be mentioned on this list as he has not missed on any guest features this year and totally took the streets by storm with his verse on Mashbeatz' "Never Ride" song. Maglera Doe Boy is scheduled to release his debut album in September this year and is highly anticipated since its announcement.
Tembisa's neighbourhood hero, Touchline is one of the most elite rappers of the new generation and has been proving how ill his pen game is over and over again. Looking forward to releasing his album later this year (maybe 2023), Touchline has released his mixtape, "S.O.O.N 2" in February which earned him a seat at the hip-hop table and has been in many conversations since he reached over 1 million streams across all streaming platforms!
Pheli's favourite street rapper, Thato Saul has been unstoppable this year and has been reaching impressive milestones with the release of his album, "Life Is Gangsta". With no skips on the album, Thato Saul gained 500K streams in the first week of its release and later reached 1 million streams in the second. Thato Saul is almost everywhere right now and you can hear him on either podcasts or features! A refreshing breed of talent and deserves a spot on the list!
I am not one to hype or gas certain artists or music but when the music hits you in a way that leaves you amazed, it happens to be a great well-put album and deserves to get its praise. singer-songwriter and rapper, Money Badoo released a solid 8/10 album in May titled, "Porn$tar". Money Badoo is an enjoyable artist and very likable. The debut album has definitely earned her a spot on the list of the most exciting artists to look out for this year.
Pretorian based rapper, Loatinover Pound is an interesting artist, who is very new to many ears. He was first heard on A-Reece's latest EP, "The Burning Tree" in April this year and then later released his solo EP titled, "Hood Misunderstood" in June. There is something special about this artist and he is indeed an exciting act to look out for.
Jones the menace is an artist that has truly grown on me and many listeners and has been really proving a point on several features and on his debut trap album, "Big Supa Way" released in May. Flow Jones Jr. caters for true trap enthusiasts. Although his sound is common overseas, Flow Jones Jr. brings in something new in the South African scene.
Not new to the scene but however becoming more dominant this year with plenty of releases. The Pretorian 'Rap Steve Biko' is an exciting rapper to be in tuned with! Following the release of his "Alive" single with PdotO and Jay Jody, Blaklez still has plenty to prove to those that overlook him. Recently dropping his "Beautiful Blak Art (Part 1)", it proves that Blaklez still cares about the art of rap and is criminally underrated. At the rate he's moving at this year, it makes him an exciting act to look out for.
