The latest episode of The Close-Up features ground-breaking rapper, creative entrepreneur, and ground-breaker Siya Slikour Metane. He shares his fascinating journey from growing up Leondale, Katlehong to forming the iconic rap group Skwatta Kamp and later becoming an innovator in the business of entertainment and media.
Slikour remains one of the most recognizable rappers in the country, having formed award winning rap group Skwatta Kamp that went on to win double South African Music Awards and become the highest selling hip hop album for their debut Mkhukhu Funkshen.
In the mid 2000s, Slikour went solo with the release of his Ventilation Mixtape Series which inspired his work in the entertainment and media space, developing an agency Ventilation, which would work with Sprite, Black Berry, Coca Cola and other prominent brands.
After the release of his controversial song Blacks Are Fools, Slikour went through a depressive period in his life where he had to pull away from the music industry.
“It was the time I knew that I needed to leave the music industry, I was sleeping twice a day, highly highly depressed, I don't know if I was depressed, I just don't know what was happening”. - Slikour
This period in his life led to the formation of Slikour OnLife, a creative media agency that connects brands to youth culture through music.

Slikour narrates the story behind his journey from building a home studio in the 90s, inventing the ‘Freestyle’ feature on Jam Alley, forming Skwatta Kamp and the break-up, to his own journey in music and entrepreneurship.
The Close-Up is a documentary styled web-series that explores the stories behind some of the most interesting personalities in media and entertainment.
