On their debut EP, 'Amagalelo', the musical duo of Aubrey Qwana and Tha Maniac DJ introduce the world to their genre-blending mix of isicathamiya, maskandi and hip-hop—the traditional meets the futuristic.
“iGhost” best represents the EP’s tone with a propulsive drumline, rumbling log drums and a blaring synth. “uBaba and “Nomalizo” both feature xylophone melodies and heavily drenched Auto-Tune lyrics about navigating life’s setbacks and the intoxicating pull of romantic love. The EP’s adventurous hybrid of maskandi and house congeals on “Umdanso” and “Amafilimu”.
“Amagalelo” is a Zulu word for milestone, and on their lean offering, the duo earn the full length and breadth of that word. With its blend of diametrically opposed genres, Amagalelo builds and treads new ground in South Africa’s musical landscape.
