I don't think I have had to follow rollouts as close as I have this year and I have enjoyed that because it allows the artist to get across the message behind the music. G.M.I Venus' 'CRANBERRY, GiN & TREE$' is an album I've been looking forward to for some time and it was the first album I listened to this morning because it had the strongest single releases in its build-up. G.M.I Venus is probably one of the few artists that can rap as well as they sing and it makes for a unique listening experience because you feel like you're listening to a joint album rather than a solo effort.
Being as versatile as he is can be somewhat of an Achilles heel for artists because they struggle with settling on one sound and end up being pulled in different directions. G.M.I. Venus is an artist that didn't let that get in the way. On songs like 'Kei$ha Burn$,' he offers us Pop R&B vibes with his singing delivery and switches into his rap bag for the verses and that provides enough variation to keep the listener on their toes. Staying on the theme of singing, G.M.I. Venus flexes his singing and songwriting ability on the smooth 'Dwn2Ply(DO U Feel the $ame)'. If you haven't guessed it by now, R&B Venus is my favourite side of him but don't let that take away from his rapping as that's just my preference. Songs like 'Twilight' and 'Nikka!!' are a far cry from the more soulful and R&B inspired songs on the album. I particularly enjoy G.M.I Venus' rap performances when he is backed by production that provides him with the bounce and tempo to show off his swagger as a rapper. As if providing songs that cater for the whole spectrum of rap and R&B wasn't enough, G.M.I. Venus proved he is equally adept at crafting songs that have sounds from home like 'Northern Love Groove II' and 'All Night' which both give me nostalgia.
When an artist says 'this album has something for everyone' I prepare myself for the songs that lie outside of their area of expertise because more usually than not they don't do a good job in that regard but in the case of G.M.I. Venus, he genuinely does have something for everyone and most importantly, he executes at an elite level.
