@valleysixteen_ 'Apartment Flaws' EP Is A Pop Must Have

By @Lesiba on 11/23/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

Valley Sixteen is someone I recently found out about courtesy of Sportscene's 'Weekend Turn Up' which she was recently featured on.

She caught my interest when she said she's inspired by Billie Eilish and listening to this EP, I could feel the inspiration but by no means is she a 'copy and paste' and I enjoy her dark interpretation of pop. I love how she tackles themes like mental health and heartbreak without glamorising it, which is a trap that many artists fall into irrespective of the genre. I can tell that she has an amazing voice but she doesn't lean on it much. Instead, she focuses on making her songs melodic and her writing style kept me enthralled on tracks like 'Borderline', but she does have moments where she lets her vocal ability shine through with songs like 'Icy' and 'Everybody Knows'. It's exciting times for the pop scene in South Africa with artists like Valley Sixteen spearheading the genre. Stream 'Apartment Flaws' below.
