Alt Radar - 5 Projects You Should Check Out ft @phumetheartist, @Yolophonik, @the_africanime_, @lordkezworld, @ZRITHEWICKED & @marsbaby_

By @Lesiba on 10/06/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

I am truly in love with the music that Alternative artists are making in the country and I thought I should take the time to suggest 5 projects that dropped this year that I think you should check out if you are a fan of the genre.

'Pink Floyd Is a Guitar' by Sonder the Africanime

I struggle to find the words to describe fae's music but I will try my best. Sonder The Africanime's PFIAG feels spiritual and is stripped down to just a few elements. Despite this, every song on PFIAG feels full, and you're completely immersed in fae's world. Imagine being underwater and a mermaid is singing to you. That's what fae's music feels like. What a unique artist.

'JUICEBOX' By LordKez

The above tweet is an accurate description of how I feel about JUICEBOX EP:) On a serious note, LordKez has been consistently delivering some of the most entertaining alternative music for a couple of years now and JUICEBOX saw her flex her versatility by venturing into a world where she blends traditional pop vibes with her unique taste in alternative music. I think that she pushed herself in terms of flows and melodies on JUICEBOX and it made for an encapsulating listen.

'Early Transcendentals' By Phume The Artist and Yolophonik

I think you can already get a sense of the vibe of this EP from the cover art. Phume The Artist and Yolophonik was a collab that I didn't know that I needed in life. The EP honestly feels like a trip in the clouds from the moment you press play. The trance production paired with Phume The Artist's distant vocals make you feel like you're floating for 10 minutes.

'Ambedo' By Zri

Zri is an artist that has a unique take on alternate R&B and he dives deep into the fringes of the sub-genre with this EP. Almost everything about this EP feels alt, from the production to how he delivers his vocals. 'The best thing about Ambedo' is its subtle shifts in sound on every song to accompany the message that Zri was trying to share.

'Salem' By Mars Baby

'Salem' was my introduction to Mars Baby and I was blown away by how well produced it is. When listening to 'Salem' you get the feeling that it was self-produced because of how he effortlessly floats on top of the production. 'Salem' is genuinely a piece of art that has extremely high replay value because of how unique it is. You can't find an artist that can put you in the same space as Mars Baby.
