Don Calya is one of the most unique talents that I have seen in a while. The term 'versatile' is loosely thrown around when it comes to describing artists today. Most of the time a 'versatile' artist is really just executing a small variety of styles within a genre. Don Calya is one of the few artists that are truly versatile having done alternative pop, EDM and hip hop to name a few, however, there is one drawback to being versatile. What is it that you do best? What do you want to be known for? You can't be the jack of all trades but the master of nothing, and that is precisely where Don Calya is in her career.
'Count On You' is Don Calya's moment of her coming into her own, bringing together all of her years of development and experimenting and focusing that into one polished song. I'm still not sure how I feel when I listen to this song, and that's a good thing by the way. When I pay attention to what is being said in the song, 'Count On You' is a song about heartbreak and longing for someone that you love. On the other hand, the production brings out feelings on the opposite side of the spectrum. It feels like a summer 'bop'. I can already see myself listening to this in December, probably drinking, and making memories with the people I love. Sometimes it's best to hear things, as the saying goes, 'from the horse's mouth', and this is what Don Calya had to say about 'Count On You', “The Single Count on you had been for an ex-lover, who I strongly felt about and even though I knew it may not have been the perfect time together. I put my ego aside to really express what I am truly feeling, wanting to show my rebels (fans) that it is okay to be vulnerable, confused or miss someone who you’ve had to let go. Love is not linear.” Stream 'Count On You' below.
