Black musicians gave birth to rock music, which then gave birth punk rock, and now we have trap. Granted, trap music is more of a byproduct of rap and hip-hop, its style is so similar to punk rock, that we can't help but think back to the greats of the past when discussing it.
Today, with the style of trap music we're seeing, it's hard to call Champagne69 trappers, because in all honesty they strike out more as ragers if you had to name it. Their latest EP, 808 Therapy!, is a perfect example for punk trap. When Empire character, Cookie Lyon said, "you won't hear the knock at the door," as a threat, Taraji P Henson's delivery made the threat clear. If only Champagne69 had adequately warned that their beat composition would create an equally potent punch. "Go" is the first track, with an instrumental that spares no one and hits every listener in the chest.
The 69 boys often get a lot of flack for not being audible, from myself included, however it was nice to hear the play on audio and lyrical delivery with 808 Therapy! This EP is an easy listen, clocking only five minutes, however, it's certainly worth enjoying!
