ASAP Shembe has steadily built up anticipation for a 2019 project since January. Today, Shembe released Iskhathi Umkhathi, a joint project with BluuCheese. The five track project is musical in its beat production. With Fireman assisting a couple of the tracks, the the duo have produced a beat oriented project.
The lyrics are often short and repetitive, which allowed the instrumentals to shine throughout. Unfortunately there were instances where the post-production when played over speakers did certain tracks an injustice. Occasionally, there was a type of muffling that seemed to diminish the sound and crispness of the vocals and beat.
Nevertheless, Iskhathi Umkhathi is enjoyable and alternative. ASAP Shembe and BluuCheese presented South Africa with their take on maskandi, digital maskandi to be specific. The moody project earns a nod from us and deserves a listen from you.
