She's too young for you if she doesn't know about the Hip Hop Scholar. More than that, though, is recognising the importance of what people like Thabiso Khati have done for the hip hop culture. Music journalist, Helen Herimbi is one person who knows this and has made it her mission to give our music legends their flowers while they can still smell them. The best part about her mission is that she has moved to include the fans in this gifting of i(m)bali.Let's start at the beginning, i(m)bali started as a podcast where Helen sits with living legends to not only celebrate them but get to know their life stories at the same time. This explains why the podcast name reads as imbali, and once you remove the "m," it is ibali (tales). Fast forward to today, the podcast is now an event that you can replay visually like you will today with this episode. Thabiso gives us an in-depth background of his rough upbringing in 80's Soweto, a time that was tumultuous for the township. He also lets us know about when he first fell in love with hip hop, and for the people who think he is an "asshole" as he says, you will get to understand where the ice in him may come from. He also retells stories of how he was the first person in South Africa to sell mixtapes outside of Lé Club, the same place where he met Amunishn. Phew!
