@IamCruzAfrika - Godly

By @ on 08/10/2018 in Projects You Should Hear

After months of promotion, Cruz Afrika has finally released his latest body of work called Godly. The ten track project is filled with melody and lacks nothing in terms of energy from the start to finish.

What better way to start off a project than with the value of prayer, Cruz sets it off with a song called Pray For Me where he raps about the various struggles he faces and asks fans and family to intercede on his behalf. I was especially impressed by the way he managed to turn a trap tune into a personal, melodic tune with a message, and we see this all throughout the project. Cruz switches the vibe a bit on track 2 where he reminisces about a lost lover with a capturing sing along chorus sounding like it was taken straight out of afropop star Ntando's album. Hip hop legend Zola was a great pick, we get to hear the OG get on some melodies as he laments his lost love.

The project starts to get a bit more laid back from track 3 on a song called Proud, which is a song dedicated to his mother. Phila Madlingozi delivers the dreamy hook on this one, whilst Cruz takes the verses and expresses his appreciation for his mother's sacrifices. He maintains the same energy on track 4 and 5 called Side Chick, as well as You and I which are both love jams. I found it pretty ironic how on Side Chick the rappers have a voice note of a man being cheated on (a side nigga) though the song is about side chicks. Regardless, the song is a smooth rendition that will be a joy amongst the ladies. You and I which features Power is along the same lines and the rappers talk about dancing the night away with a lover.

The second half of the project is made up of mostly trap turn up joints with a touch of afrobeat, track 6 is a song called Motswako, where the rapper jumps on an African trap instrumental and talks about his musical autonomy. Stu (Lean) is a song about getting turnt in the studio, a song I personally felt should have been one of the lead singles to the album. Feeling Good and Shaka Zulu, which were both released ahead of the album, maintain the same trappy feel. Cruz saved the best for last as he ends off the project with an up tempo afrobeat track alongside Rhyma. The song is probably the best song on the project, in my personal opinion, and it has the potential for continental reach.

Overall, this is a pretty decent offering from Cruz Afrika covering a range of topics from love tunes to turn up songs. He put an effort into catering to different demographics when making the project and I'm sure fans from all walks of hip hop can find at least one song they love on the project. Make sure to check it out.
