In The Stu @SizweMpofuWalsh Talks Where Hip Hip, Youth x Inequality Connect

By @Spokenpriestess on 09/06/2017 in On The Ground

I do not know where to begin in introducing this powerful sit down for you. We sat with the insightful Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh to discuss his album Democracy and Delusion, which is officially out today, in depth. The intention of the album is both brilliant and a necessity if you consider it carefully. As we go through the album track list, Sizwe awakens us to the fact that although some of us may be in a "good place" in our lives, we can never fully be so with the rest of the country in an even worse state.

The ideas of community, economic education and participation come to play in this album where Sizwe draws inspiration from hip hop for his expression while using it as a case study. He addresses the bad state of affairs in the country in terms of service delivery, entrepreneurship and government involvement. As we keep talking the issue of identity loss amongst black people becomes more imminent when coming to conversations of creation, ownership, and accountability to one's community. This is one of the best conversations I've watched in a very long time solely owed to the fact that it addresses social issues that we otherwise would never freely discuss on the regular as young people cause we "hate politics". There is much to be learned from the idea exchanges here.
